About this data
Met Office Global forecast:Met Office Global (Unified Model) 10km deterministic – British Crown copyright Met Office, via Open-Meteo Open Data – CC BY-SA 4.0
Model runs:Four runs a day (00, 06, 12 and 18 GMT), each becoming available some hours after its nominal time. The 00 and 12 GMT runs reach 7 days; 06 and 18 GMT stop at two and a half and are marked "(short)" in the run list.
Trial pipeline: this feed is built by a second, newer data pipeline (a small always-on server rather than the site's usual scheduled jobs), run alongside the existing one to see how well it holds up. The freshness dot above shows how old its newest data is.
Deterministic, not a probability: this is a single model solution, so it shows one possible outcome rather than a range. Treat it as guidance on pattern and timing, not as a forecast of exact totals at a place.
Comparing models: all seven render to the same map extent with the same colour scale, so a colour means the same millimetres whichever is selected. Differences you see between them are the models disagreeing, not the maps being drawn differently.
Isobars (MSLP): on by default, drawn as pressure lines over the rainfall; switch them off behind the settings button on the controls bar (or on the bar itself, on a wide enough screen). H/L pressure centres are labelled with their central pressure in hPa.

When something significant is happening, a strip under the menu on the homepage says so: a named storm, an amber or red Met Office warning, the Flood Guidance Statement at medium or high risk, or a Severe Flood Warning. The most serious leads, and each links straight to its details. It says when the warnings were last checked, folds down to one line, and is not shown on a quiet day.
The homepage map, Radar & Sat and Satellite now show lightning from the Met Office's ground network by default, as rings coloured by age that stay on the map for an hour, so a storm's track is easy to follow. EUMETSAT's satellite lightning is still in each map's settings.
On a phone, the key panel on the main map pages is now a slim title bar under the menu, which leaves more of the map showing. Folding the bottom panel, on any screen, keeps the play button, the time slider and the date, and hides the drop-downs, so you can still scrub the timeline.
