About UKV vs Obs Comparison

This comparison tool delivers a synchronised, side-by-side spatial analysis of live observed rainfall against the Met Office's high-resolution UK Variable resolution (UKV) model.

By selecting either Radar or telemetry Rain Gauges as the observation baseline, you can view the forecast accumulations alongside observations. The third pane displays the absolute Difference (UKV minus Obs) to pinpoint over-forecasts (model wetter than reality, shown in blue) and under-forecasts (model drier than reality, shown in red).

Data sources & details

  • Precipitation Radar: Met Office H5 1km grid composite observation data, compiled from the UK weather radar network. Updated every 15 minutes.

  • UKV Forecast Model: The Met Office’s premier variable-resolution numerical weather prediction configuration (~1.5km grid spacing over the UK). Model runs are initialized and updated 4 times daily.

  • Telemetry Rain Gauges: Real-time tipping-bucket rain gauge network, providing actual physical telemetry readings at 15-minute intervals.
